When school started up in the fall it was difficult for me to continue creating and posting blogs and videos. Sorry about that. I’ll get some more good hamster information for you. Look here’s a new video now!
In this video I talk about three different types of hamster cages. I like the plastic ones best because you can often connect different parts making the cages more interesting. Plus they can be taken apart to clean.
If you are looking to buy a new hamster cage take a look in my online hamster products store. I have a few different cages ready to go for your little creature.
I have already posted several times about my hamster escaping. It seems that escape is the goal of every hamster. Well, what do you do when a hamster escapes? How do you find it?
I put together this quick video to give you some hamster search tips so you can get your escaped hamster back in its cage.
Here’s my hamster, Pookie, walking around on a chair and looking for a way down. It’s a real short video (it doesn’t take her long to figure out how to jump).
She looks ridiculous doesn’t she? I think it’s more like an intentional fall than a good jump. But she does land on all four feet. Then she tries to get away by running under the chair.
Nothing to worry about though. She did not have a chance at escape this time.
OK, sometimes there are different types of creatures to love. Sometimes you find them and sometimes they find you!
While I usually prefer furry animals, some other little animals are so cute they deserve to be mentioned as well.
Here’s a nice little tree frog that jumped onto my shirt and climbed up to my shoulder. I wanted to keep it, but decided that finding appropriate food would be a problem. So I let it go.
Here’s a video showing how to make a nice mini-sandwich that your hamster will love…
You will need bread, cheddar cheese, an apple, and some lemon juice.
Cut the bread into two small squares. Cut a thin piece of cheese the same size square as the bread. And cut a similar size square of apple. Dip the apple in the lemon juice to maintain freshness and a nice color. Plus hamsters like the lemon flavor too.
To make the sandwich put one piece of bread on the bottom. The cheese goes on top of the bread. The apple goes on top of the cheese. And finally the other piece of bread goes on top. Voila!
When hamsters find food, especially when it’s more than they can eat at once, they try to hoard it. Instead of holding the food in its teeth like a squirrel and then hunting for a hiding place, a hamster will shove the food into its cheek pouches. This way it can get enough for days of eating all at once.
The hamster will carry the food back to its nest if it can get there.
Here’s a video of my hamster Pookie with full cheeks.
Sometimes Pookie fills her cheeks too full. I mean she puts too much in that she can’t even squeeze into the tubes in her cage. Sometimes, with her cheeks still full, she tries to chew the tubes wider, thinking they are just holes in the soil instead of hard plastic.
Eventually she will give up and empty her cheeks in a corner of the cage away from her nest. Usually she’ll return to the corner to eat. Sometimes she’ll take a smaller pile up to her nest.
Here’s a look at the reinforcements we made to Pookie’s cage. Sometimes we call her the Hamsternator because she’s so strong and gets out of everything.
The first cage is a smaller 2-level cage with a bungee cord holding the water bottle in place. Sometimes Pookie knocks the water bottle to the floor and then chews the hole bigger.
The main cage has padlock on the door because she has figured out how to open it without any problem. We have a bungee over top because she can life the top of the cage off of the wire sides and escape that way.
And we have tape on the bed area because she has learned to open that.
Before we added the second cage we used to have a small room with a dome top. She had figured out how to twist the top open on that too.
Now she is trained to go to the door on the smaller cage when she wants to come out and play.
